Low-cost fuel cell on horizon 20th October 2006
ITM Power has announced that it is preparing for the introduction of low-cost fuel cell technologies into the market.
It has stated that it is in discussion with other companies about the potential for developing the low-cost fuel cell technologies to be used in the energy market.
The company believes that it can reduce the cost of fuel cells, making them more available to the public and allowing for more of the products to enter into the marketplace, providing a realistic alternative to other forms of energy.
"One of our strategies is to be able to provide a low-cost electrolyser and a low-cost fuel cell that could provide the essential technology necessary to convert intermittent low-value renewable energy into a reliable non-fossil energy supply," commented ITM Power's chief executive Jim Heathcote.
He continued: "ITM has identified multiple applications for this technology and has entered into early stage discussions with third parties about possible collaboration in order to bring these products to market."
The company has stated that it has significantly increased its the power densities at which its fuel cells can operate, which can help to keep the cost of running fuel cells to a minimum.
