Around 26,000 Lonmin Platinum workers are on strike following concerns over the method of their payment by the company.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has called the industrial action, which began on Sunday afternoon, because of persistent problems with Lonmin's worker payment system.

Speaking to Mining Weekly, NUM spokesman Lesiba Seshoka said that the union had received a strike certificate over the weekend and as such called on its workers to down tools.

According to Mr Seshoka, Lonmin's payment system has meant that some workers are being paid the wrong amount while others have not been paid at all.

"We are getting tired of Lonmin," he added.

Mr Seshoka concluded: "They need to make sure they get their system in order."

The strike is likely to deepen Lonmin's production problems, which have already forced the firm to reduce its full-year sales forecast to between 820,000 oz and 840,000 oz, down from its previous estimate of up to one million ounces of platinum.
