Lonmin to develop fuel cell-powered locomotives 11th June 2003
Lonmin Platinum has revealed it is considering implementing the use of fuel cell-powered locomotives and loaders in its underground mining complexes.
As part of a joint venture with equipment manufacturer and vendor Sandvik Tamrock South Africa (STSA), Lonmin is testing a prototype continuous-mining machine on narrow UG2 reef at the Rowland shaft at its Western Platinum operation, in the North West.
The project is intended to form part of the company's mechanisation and automation strategy as it seeks to re-engineer its mining operations.
Kevin Moxham, Lonmin Platinum's group mechanisation and automation manager says that the main objective is to boost efficiency and reduce diesel-engine-powered equipment in underground operations.
'One pillar of the mechanisation and automation strategy is the use of alternative power sources, including fuel-cells,' he commented.
However, before further work can be undertaken the necessary safety permits will have to be obtained from the Department of Minerals and Energy.
Mr Moxham forecasts that a prototype fuel-cell-powered loader will be in operation in South Africa in two to three years.
