Lonmin Platinum agrees two-year deal with NUM 17th October 2007
South Africa's National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and Lonmin Platinum have announced the completion of a two-year wage settlement.
Lonmin has revealed that it has negotiated a settlement in relation to workers at its Marikana operations that will see the majority of employees receiving a wage increase of ten per cent.
Under the terms of the agreement, Lonmin has stated that all workers in categories three to eight will receive the ten per cent increase as well as further benefits to their terms of employment during the first year, while there will be a further eight per cent growth in wages for the employees during the second year.
The agreement is effective from October 1st this year and was welcomed by Lonmin, which added that it looked forward to continuing to work with the NUM on "our operational and transformational objectives".
Lonmin Platinum also confirmed that talks are ongoing with two other unions, UASA and Solidarity.
Earlier this week, Solidarity spokesperson Reint Dykema said he did not think it likely that the union could come to a long-term deal with Lonmin and added that a one-year agreement would be the most likely outcome.
