Lonmin has announced that it produced 188,350 oz of platinum for the three months to June 30th with a total of 369,674 oz of platinum group metals.

Platinum production was up by 8.2 per cent and the total production of platinum group metals has increased by 13.1 per cent.

Brad Mills, Chief Executive of the firm, said that the introduction of a new mining team was already reaping rewards.

"I am confident that we are now substantially better equipped to exploit Lonmin's unique and high quality PGM deposits," he added.

The new mining team implemented a number of new strategies aimed at increasing efficiency, reliability and productivity.

A statement from the miner revealed that 184,919 sealable oz of platinum had been produced from concentrators, representing an increase of 18 per cent.

Lonmin revealed that a power shortage at its number one furnace resulted in the deferral of between 10,000 and 15,000 oz of platinum sales to the 2009 financial year.
