A new spark plug from Bosch, which features a fine-wire centre electrode with a proprietary iridium alloy, lasts four times longer than a traditional copper plug, according to the company.

As engines become smaller and direct fuel injection becomes more popular in car designs, Bosch says a change in spark plug technology was necessary.

The Bosch Iridium line has 15 part number, covering 71 per cent of vehicles currently in operation, and there are plans to expand the programme in the months to come to cover more part numbers and vehicles.

"By maintaining the OE spark position/gap and using best-in-class materials ... and exclusive manufacturing processes, new Bosch Iridium surpasses all other spark plugs by delivering both performance and long life," said Mark Wilkinson, group product manager for spark plugs.

Other Bosch spark plugs use platinum core technology to provide faster starts, smoother acceleration and increase fuel efficiency.
