London emissions tax for heavy vehicles 16th September 2005
London mayor Ken Livingstone is proposing an emissions tax on roads inside the M25.
The tax would be levied on all trucks, buses and coaches with emissions exceeding Euro III emissions limits.
Mr Livingstone is supporting the plan in an effort to reduce emissions of nitrogen dioxide and particulates, the latter of which are solely emitted by diesel-run vehicles.
Buses, trucks and coaches are commonly run on diesel and it is hoped that the tax will prompt fleet owners to upgrade their vehicles to newer, less polluting models.
It is viewed as increasingly important to reduce the amount of damaging pollutants entering the air.
London has already introduced a congestion charge for central London both to raise the money for public transport but also to tackle pollution.
The plan to create low emission zones will shortly be discussed by Transport for London's board, following which a period of public consultation will take place.
