A platinum and diamond ring by Fei Liu was among a huge number of pieces crafted in the precious metal on display at the Primetime Emmy Awards over the weekend.

The offering from the Chinese, Birmingham-based designer, known as 'Flower', was paraded by House MD star Lisa Edelstein at the glitzy event in Los Angeles.

Liu had already received star billing after being selected as one of four winners in the 'Establish Designers' category at the recent Lonmin Design Innovation Awards.

A number of other Hollywood stars also showed off platinum jewellery on the red carpet as the metal's naturally white colour enhances the brilliance of some rare gemstones.

"Classic Hollywood glamour is the hottest trend on the red carpet this year," explained style expert Michael O'Connor.

"Celebrities are choosing to make a statement with their jewellery by highlighting either their neck, wrists or ears with bold pieces."

Actors such as Seth Green (Family Guy), Rex Lee (Entourage) and Kate Flannery (The Office) were among those who attended a jewellery preview party in Beverly Hills.

They were invited to choose from a range of platinum-based pieces from top designers, including 100-carat diamond necklaces, vintage men's cufflinks and rare men's watches.

Making its US debut in the assortment was the 'Aqua Collection', described by hosts Platinum Guild International as a group of "one-of-a-kind masterpiece necklaces".

A huge number of other celebrities opted for platinum jewellery at various parties and events connected with the Emmy Awards, which was enjoying its 61st instalment.

Alyson Hannigan selected platinum and 28-carat diamond earrings, a platinum and 70-carat diamond bracelet, and a platinum and 11-carat diamond ring by Chopard.

Patricia Arquette sported platinum and diamond earrings, ring and bracelet, a combination which was also favoured by British television presenter Cat Deeley.

Glenn Close plumped for platinum and diamond earrings designed by Fred Leighton, while Jessica Lange showed off a platinum and diamond bracelet by Kwiat.

Among the other stars sparkling in platinum jewellery were Jaime Pressly, Olivia Wilde, Elisabeth Moss, Phyllis Smith, Chris Harrison, John Krasinski and Kristen Quintrall.
