LifeCar displayed at British Motor Show 23rd July 2008

Morgan's LifeCar, which features a platinum fuel cell stack giving just 22 kilowatts of electricity, can reach a top speed of 90mph.

While this may seem impossible considering the minimal power, the designers say that is all it needs to perform.

Speaking to the Register, Matthew Parkin, Managing Director of Morgan, said: "With a car this light and this slippery, 30 horsepower is plenty."

Their concept is that too many fuel cell stacks can weigh down a vehicle, meaning it needs more power, but by using lighter stacks they can shed weight.

The LifeCar, which stores power through ultracapacitors, is currently on show at the British Motor Show.

The ultracapacitors will provide extra boost as well as storing power meaning the car wastes less energy accelerating and overcoming friction.

Mr Parkin said the vehicle would be ready for sale in about two or three years and the firm is yet to decide on a price.

The car was developed in partnership with Oxford and Cranfield universities and Qinteq and also incorporates platinum catalysts.
