LCD market set to swell 3rd March 2006

LCD television sales in south-east Asia are expected to soar in the coming years, according to electronics giant Samsung.

The firm estimates that the entire south-east Asian LCD TV market could be worth £1.4 billion a year by 2008, according to a statement published by Dow Jones.

"We have seen explosive growth in the demand for LCD TVs in the region lately, especially Singapore and Australia where demand has grown three to fourfold within a six-month period," said Samsung Asia's chief executive Sang-Jin Park.

Samsung Asia experienced a rise in sales of 22 per cent last year to £5 billion, with the growing popularity of LCD televisions a major factor.

Sony has the largest share of the global LCD television market at the current time, according to DisplaySearch.

The firm had a 14.6 per cent share in sales during the fourth quarter last year, helped by a growing consumer taste for larger sets, which the firm specialises in with its Bravia sets.
