LCD interest helps Corning 17th October 2005

Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) glass is in demand as an increasing number of consumers look to buy LCD televisions and computers.

According to LCD producer Corning, demand is growing and the company has stated that it expects major growth in demand over the coming months and years.

Predicting sales of 19 million LCD televisions worldwide by the end of this year, Corning has also forecast growth to 32 million next year, followed by sales of around 45 million units in 2007.

Such expectations have largely been created on the back of such strong demand for 30 to 39 inch screens, which Jim Clappin, general manager of Corning Display Technologies, predicts will be the fastest growing segment of his company's business in the future.

And it is thought that the growth will be sustainable because LCD screens have a number of potential uses, far more than merely television or computer screens.

Peter Bocko, division vice president and director of commercial technology at Corning, told the Lexington Herald that "the need to interact with broadband-based information wherever you go" will help to sustain interest beyond current demand for LCD television sets.

A report from International Data Corp (IDC) recently revealed that LCD computer monitor sales in Asia are set to outstrip those of cathode-ray-tube (CRT) monitors, highlighting the growing interest in LCD screens among consumers.
