Laptop fuel cell close to commercial launch 13th March 2006
A fuel cell that can be used to power laptops and other portable devices could be commercially available by the end of the year.
Two technology firms, Antig and AVC Corporation, unveiled their offering at the CeBit trade show in Hanover, Germany last week.
The methanol-powered fuel cell could keep a laptop running for an entire working day, which could have a significant impact on working practices.
Mobile devices have become essential tools for business, but battery life is one of the limiting aspects. A laptop that could be used outside of the office without the need to recharge or plug into the mains, would support the drive towards greater mobility.
The technology used by Antig and AVC Corporation is similar to that used to power buses in pilot schemes around Europe.
Fuel cells offer a cleaner alternative to more traditional fuels and could one day replace petrol-powered engines in private vehicles.
According to press reports Antig and AVC Corporation's laptop fuel cell will go into mass production later this year ahead of a commercial launch either in late 2006 or early 2007.
