Landmark vehicle emissions lawsuit begins in America 12th April 2007
A court case which could impact on vehicle emissions laws and sales for platinum catalyst manufacturers is taking place in America.
The case involves a law from Vermont's state authority that requires car manufacturers to cut emissions by 30 per cent on cars registered in the area.
However, the assembled cabal of car marques and auto industry trade organisations are contesting the ruling stating that it contravenes federal laws which imbue the national government solely with the power to set standards for Corporate Average Fuel Economy.
Meanwhile, the state of Vermont counters that the impact on its natural resources and the environment wreaked by emissions means that it has the right to amend the laws.
The outcome of the case is especially significant since a further nine states are considering imposing similar measures.
California, which is the most populous state in the union and consequently has huge amounts of drivers, has already been granted dispensation to set its own limits for emissions.
The state's increased powers are, however, set to be contested in a law suit by the auto industry, which also intends to act against proposed emissions limits changes in Rhode Island.
The judge is expected to deliver his verdict on May 4th.
