Johnson Matthey's retrofit catalytic converters 'cut harmful emissions by a third' 24th September 2010
Johnson Matthey's emissions reduction devices can cut the amount of particulate matter released from exhaust systems by up to a third, it has been confirmed.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conducted Phase I and Phase II tests on the company's basic Diesel Catalytic Converter (DCC) and Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) solutions.
According to the EPA, the in-use tests revealed that they are able to slash harmful emissions by an average of 27 per cent and a maximum of 32 per cent.
Marty Lassen, Director of Commercial Development and Marketing at the firm, was delighted with the outcome of the tests, which used ultra-low-sulphur diesel fuel.
"Many other manufacturers conduct their tests using other kinds of fuels, which does not reflect current on-road and off-road conditions," he said.
"The EPA also proved that Johnson Matthey's DCC converter maintains its high performance even after 100,000 miles or more."
As a result of the findings, the EPA has now extended the model year coverage of the DCC for EGR and non-EGR engines to 1988-2006 - the broadest in the industry.
Furthermore, the particulate matter reduction verification level on the DCC has been increased to 25 per cent for engines built between 1998 and 2003.
The DCC product is capable of cutting HC and CO by 40 per cent, while also being able to fit into existing mufflers and operate on non-road equipment.
Johnson Matthey is a leading platinum refiner which employs about 9,000 people in 30 countries.
