Japanese fuel cell bus programme expanded 19th July 2006
A fuel cell-powered bus service, which was first trialled in Japan in mid-March, is to begin operating again this month.
As well as resuming its services around the Central Japan International Airport south of Nagoya on July 22nd, it will also run an expanded service to and within the airport.
Buses involved in the project were developed by Toyota and Hino Motors.
The effort is part of a Japanese government fuel cell demonstration programme called the Japan Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Demonstration Project, which is intended to provide data necessary for the eventual commercialisation of fuel cell hybrid buses.
The buses will be operated by Chitanoriai, the same company that ran the fuel cell bus service during its first outing earlier this year.
Two units of the bus will also be used to shuttle passengers between the airport's passenger terminal and airplanes on the tarmac.
The buses will be fuelled at a hydrogen station, which will be set up within the airport.
Fuel cell technology utilises a pgm catalyst, which aids the reaction between hydrogen fuel and oxygen that produces power.
