Japan automakers boost production 'like never before' 1st September 2011
Carmakers in Japan are increasing production much faster than predictions suggested following the earthquake and tsunami in March.
Automobile production in July 2011 was recorded as 790,325 units, the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) said yesterday (August 31st).
Compared with the 867,242 units total recorded for the same month in 2010, this marks a decrease of 76,917 units, or 8.9 per cent.
However, this was a much healthier level of output compared to the last two months, which have seen year-on-year declines of 14 per cent in June and nearly 31 per cent in May.
"All the automakers are boosting production like we never have before, and suppliers are preparing for expanding production in the second half as well," JAMA head Toshiyuki Shiga, who is also chief operating officer at Nissan, told Bloomberg.
Both Toyota and Nissan are expecting to hit full production levels before the year is out.
Shiga also indicated that some production capacity in Japan could be moved overseas in future.
