Bosch claims it has set the benchmark for spark plugs with its latest device that uses a special iridium alloy fine wire centre electrode design.

The plug, which also relies on a laser-welded iridium-platinum-inlay on the ground electrode, is designed for use in the majority of US, Asian and European-built cars.

Bosch works closely with vehicle manufacturers to develop and improve spark plugs for a range of vehicles, explained Mark Wilkinson, spark plugs product manager for Bosch.

This knowledge is then applied to replacement spark plugs, he added.

"Bosch's strategy has been to use advanced technology, materials and innovation to offer premium quality spark plugs that provide superior performance and durability for motorists, and new Bosch Iridium does just that," Mr Wilkinson said.

The plug employs OE design, material and manufacturing techniques to make it ideal for modern engines.

Mr Wilkinson explained that powerful new engines, especially those utilising Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) and turbochargers, require changes in OE spark plug design.

"One of the keys to the new Bosch Iridium plug's outstanding performance and durability is the extensive use of precious metal in both the centre and ground electrodes, and the unique Bosch 360-degree Continuous Wave Laser Welding used to secure the fine wire centre electrode, ensuring that there will be no cracking in the intense heat and pressure of combustion," he added.

Vehicle manufacturers have been focusing on "spark projection" - the location of the spark in the combustion chamber.

"For applications where Bosch is not the original plug, we designed and produced our Bosch Iridium to have a spark projection the same as or most like that of the OE plug," explained Mr Wilkinson. "This is very important, especially in GDI applications."

Bosch, which manufacturers spark plugs from platinum as well as iridium, unveiled its new Iridium Plug to the US public earlier this year during the Driving Innovation road show.
