Indian hospital takes up new platinum based aneurysm treatment 21st May 2003

A major hospital in India has become the first institute in the country to take up the revolutionary new platinum-based cerebral aneurysm surgery.

The King Edward Memorial (KEM) hospital in Mumbai yesterday (May 20th) saw Indian surgeons use the new procedure developed by Manhattan-based Dr Arani Bose.

The minimally invasive procedure, which involves a platinum coil filling the space in the aneurysm, creates a clot restricting blood flow into the weakened area.

Instead of the traditional operation, which would see neurosurgeons cut through the skull and attach clips to the neck of the aneurysm, a small puncture in the groin is made through which the platinum coil is directed towards the aneurysm.

A 70-year-old man from Murud-Janjira became the first to undergo the procedure at the KEM Hospital.
