Implats workers return to the mines 29th June 2004

Impala Platinum (Implats) has confirmed today (June 29th) that the workers who embarked upon a wildcat strike last week have resumed work.

The rockdrill operators who were engaged in unprotected industrial action have now begun working after extensive talks with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM).

Implats said it had received assurances that the issues raised by the rockdrill operators would be dealt with through the existing structures in place at the mine and that the shifts lost would be made up.

As a result Implats says there has been "no significant impact on production".

A total of 1,700 Impala Platinum workers were reported to have been sacked following a strike at the Rustenburg pgm site which broke out last Wednesday (June 23rd).

Operations executive Paul Visser initially announced the dismissal of the 1,700 workers, but talks saw a compromise reached.
