The world's second largest platinum miner Impala Platinum (Implats) is in discussions regarding its 83 per cent stake in junior platinum group miner Barplats, Barplats has announced in a statement.

The move has been received by analysts as part of Implats' continuing policy of reviewing its holding structure.

One anonymous expert told Business Day that the company could be seeking a deal with an empowerment consortium, for all or part of its interest in Barplats.

'Right now Barplats is burning Implats' money and it would be a good thing for Implats to sell its stake,' he commented.

'I see a minority buyout by Implats as highly unlikely,' he added.
