Implats CEO meets Mugabe 17th March 2006

Impala Platinum chief executive Keith Rumble has met with the Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe.

The world's second largest miner confirmed the news as it seeks to settle with the government over its plans to take a controlling stake in overseas mining firms.

Implats says Mr Rumble held a meeting with Mugabe and his senior advisers and cabinet on Wednesday, but remained tight-lipped over the outcome of the meetings.

While acknowledging the discussions "centred on the recently announced cabinet approved draft proposal relating to ownership of the Zimbabwean platinum industry", the statement from Implats simply indicated talks had been held.

"These discussions were open and frank and it was confirmed that the draft proposal is still work in progress," the firm said.

The controversial proposals came to light earlier this month when the cabinet approved plans by Mugabe's administration to take 51 per cent of all overseas mines.

Mines minister Amos Midzi said the act would "indigenise" the mining industry, but the proposals have already met with fierce opposition.
