Impala targets 1m platinum ounces from Zimbabwe 9th January 2007
Impala Platinum has revealed that it is looking to increase its platinum production in Zimbabwe to reach one million ounces.
David Brown, Impala's Chief Executive, has said that the mining firm could be in a position to produce one million platinum ounces within the next few years as it continues its expansion projects.
Mr Brown was quoted by the Herald as saying that Impala is looking to continue its expansion programme in Zimbabwe through its subsidiary, Zimplats, which holds the biggest right to extracting minerals in the country.
Impala's Ngezi operation currently mines around 85,000 ounces of platinum, but has targeted a substantial increase in output.
"Zimbabwe represents very significant growth for us, the organic growth in the company, which could rise to a million ounces a year," said Mr Brown.
The news comes as Impala and Aquarius Platinum announced a $23.2 million investment in their joint-owned Mimosa mine in Zimbabwe, in an effort to raise production levels at the mine to 195,000 pgm ounces.
