Impala Platinum plans to reopen shaft

Impala Platinum has announced it is planning to reopen its Clapham shaft at the Marula mine on Friday.

The shaft has been closed since Tuesday, when an explosion at the site caused the death of two of its mineworkers.

Impala has been losing 150 oz of platinum production per day since the mine was shut on Tuesday night but, speaking to Reuters, general manager of the Marula mine Pieter Sandilands said: "Blasting operations will resume at Clapham shaft this afternoon with all other mining activities being back to normal."

South Africa's Department of Minerals and Energy (DME) has given the company the go-ahead to resume operations at the shaft, Mr Sandilands said, although he could not reveal any further details due to an internal investigation into the matter being carried out by Impala.
