Impala Platinum continuing wage discussions 6th July 2007

Impala Platinum is continuing its efforts to reach an agreement with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), following the union's declaration of a dispute with the mining company.

Speaking to Mining Online, Impala Platinum's HR director Mike Teke has confirmed that the two sides are currently continuing discussions in an effort to find an agreement on the wages for miners.

Impala Platinum has offered NUM members wage increases of between seven per cent and nine per cent, but the union rejected those figures, holding out for the double digit increases it has promised its members.

Following that offer on June 27th, the NUM declared a dispute, which is the first step towards full strike action, but both sides are around the negotiating table in an effort to avert such a move, Mr Teke said.

Mr Teke refused to comment on the negotiations any further.
