Impala Platinum appoints Steve Phiri to management board 12th June 2007
Impala Platinum (Implats), the second-largest platinum producer in the world, has appointed Merafe Resources Chief Executive Officer Steve Phiri to its board, it has been confirmed.
Mr Phiri will assume the position of Non-Executive Director with immediate effect and in so doing becomes the second representative from Royal Bafokeng Holdings (RBH) to occupy a board-level management position.
Prior to working for the junior miner, Mr Phiri oversaw the corporate and legal affairs department of the Royal Bafokeng Nation (RBN), in which capacity he negotiated a resolution to a contretemps with Implats.
The appointment comes after Implats recently completed its empowerment programme and is intended to enhance its relationship with RBH.
Mr Phiri also serves as Non-Executive Director of SA Eagle Limited and is a member of the Mineral and Mining Board, which was established under the terms of the Minerals and Petroleum Development Act.
Implats yesterday announced an employee ownership plan (esop) worth R1 billion, through which up to 28,000 of its workers stand to benefit.
Meanwhile, the company is expected to begin wage negotiations with the National Union of Mineworkers and the United Associations of South Africa on Wednesday.
