Hydrogen fuel cell future discussed 4th October 2006

The hydrogen fuel cell industry has been meeting to discuss the new hydrogen quality specifications introduced in California.

At the National Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Codes and Standards Coordinating Committee, hosted by NextEnergy in Detroit, the discussions surrounded the new Californian legislation which will require hydrogen fuel quality specifications to be adopted by the beginning of 2008 to enable their commercial sale to be approved by the state.

Minutes released from the meeting reveal that delegates felt it is not yet clear that methods to accurately detect levels of contaminants have been developed to a sufficient degree to be used outside the laboratory.

Issues such as this and the units in which hydrogen should be dispensed will need to be more fully considered before hydrogen fuel cell vehicles can be sold commercially to consumers, the meeting concluded.

The National Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Codes and Standards Coordinating Committee's meetings are aimed to develop and advance fuel cell technology.
