Hydrogen capture boosts fuel cell development 17th November 2006

A new approach to capturing hydrogen has been developed which could help make fuel cells more efficient and effective.

Researchers in Canada have found a new means of capturing and releasing hydrogen in a breakthrough which is likely to overcome problems of storing hydrogen in fuel cell technologies.

The move could significantly enhance the development of mobile fuel cells by allowing them to travel further without needing any refill.

Published in the journal Science, the research involves collecting hydrogen and then releasing it on demand.

Douglas Stephan, one of the chemists working on the new technology, has described it as "a real fundamental advance" in fuel cell technology.
