HK set to adopt Euro IV standard 14th October 2005
Hong Kong chief executive Donald Tsang has outlined the region's commitment to develop new clean transport rules just days after China emphasised its new commitment to sustainable development.
Speaking during his first policy address at the Legislative Council, Mr Tsang said that he would be seeking to expand the Commission on Strategic Development, boosting membership by around 100 by inviting experts from a variety of sectors to contribute.
One of the key roles of the government would be the development of sustainable transport – with the implementation of Europe's strict emissions legislation part of this strategy, according to reports on Xinhua.
From January 2006, the Euro IV emission standards for new vehicles will be enacted, while the government has also pledged to take the lead in advancing clean diesel solutions.
Ultra-low sulphur diesel will be used in all government projects, Mr Tsang said.
The sentiments from Hong Kong echo the mainland's pledge this week to follow sustainable means, with a five-year economic plan from the world's seventh largest economy targeting long-term growth together with environmentally-friendly policies.
