Hallmarking will continue in the UK after a campaign of support from the jewellery industry saved the practice from the government's Red Tape Challenge.

Announcing over 160 regulations in the retail sector that are to scrapped or simplified, ministers confirmed that the hallmarking of platinum, gold and silver jewellery will remain.

Business and enterprise minister Mark Prisk said: "We've listened to what people have said about the confusing and overlapping rules with the aim to get rid of the ones we don't need and making the ones we do simpler to understand and put into practice.

"At the same time though we are preserving good regulation, such as the hallmarking regime, for which there was strong support."

Retail Jeweller reports that the industry left almost 6,000 comments in favour of hallmarking during the consultation process.

The government hopes that the reduction of red tape for retailers will make it easier to do business, stimulating the economy and creating jobs.
