Growth in demand for platinum spark plugs 29th September 2005
Platinum spark plugs have taken the North American market by storm and are increasingly in demand, according to a new report.
Figures from Frost & Sullivan show that platinum spark plugs are driving the North American spark plugs aftermarket because of their durability and longevity.
Frost and Sullivan research analyst Avijit Ghosh explained: "Platinum spark plugs are devised to last between 60,000 and 75,000 miles, which is almost twice that of the traditional copper spark plugs."
Demand for spark plugs has also been heightened due to an increase in the number of car makers changing their designs. The report states that the growing number of automakers using fine wire applications has resulted in a larger demand for spark plugs in the aftermarket.
With almost 70 per cent of vehicles being equipped with distributor-less ignition systems (DISs) and coil-on-plug (COP) technologies – which require greater voltage to pass through the spark plugs for longer – more car manufacturers are opting for the more durable, longer lasting platinum spark plugs.
Mr Ghosh explained: "[I]t is likely that 85 to 90 per cent of DIS installed vehicles have platinum, double platinum, or iridium spark plugs."
