GM prepares for fuel cell drive 15th September 2006

General Motors (GM) looks set for a push into the fuel cell market in the near future.

According to comments from Bob Lutz, the company's vice chairman, GM is now in a position to finance full production of its fuel cell vehicles.

Speaking to Reuters, Mr Lutz said that he was hopeful the company would have a fuel cell vehicle on the market "well before 2015".

GM has recently unveiled the Chevrolet Sequel, its first fuel cell vehicle, and Mr Lutz said he believes the technological knowledge gained from the development of that car will allow it to roll off a large number of other new vehicles in the near future.

While Mr Lutz accepted that any mass-produced fuel cell vehicle would need to keep costs down, he remains convinced that this can be achieved, commenting: "We can't come in with a financial disaster. It has to make some sense, but I'm confident we can do that."
