GM plans Chinese fuel cell car roll out after 2010 22nd January 2008

General Motors (GM) is planning to roll out fuel cell vehicles in the Chinese market after 2010, it has been announced.

The automotive giant unveiled the proposed release date for its Fuel Cell E-Flex electric drive vehicle as part of its 'drive to green' strategy, which is set to bring a raft of more environmentally friendly motor vehicles and products to the Chinese market.

GM also confirmed that all vehicles it produces this year will meet the Phase IV emission standards and that all new models will be capable of meeting emissions standards up to the Phase V standard.

The strategy also includes bringing four green products to market this year and the introduction of 11 engines capable of improved fuel economy between 2009 and 2012.

Shanghai GM President Ding Lei said: "Addressing the environmental protection and energy security issues is essential for ensuring the automotive industry's long-term sustainable development."

The plan, which has been devised with Shanghai GM's sister joint venture the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Centre, has already resulted in the unveiling of GM's first locally made eco-friendly hybrid car, the Buick LaCrosse Eco-Hybrid.
