GM announces driveable fuel cell Sequel 15th August 2006

General Motors (GM) has produced a driveable version of its Sequel concept car, powered by cutting-edge hydrogen fuel cell technology.

The vehicle debuted at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit last year, though the world's leading automobile manufacturer has only now announced the development of a marketable version.

Speaking at the Centre for Automotive Research Management Briefing Seminars in Travers City, Rick Wagoner, chairman and chief executive of GM, announced the breakthrough but could not give an indication of when to expect the Sequel in production.

"That's rocket science when you get in that car," he said. "That's the most sophisticated product – technologically advanced project – I think we've ever made in the history of GM."

GM received partial funding from the $1.2 billion hydrogen initiative established by American president George Bush in 2003.

Experts predict mass production of the Sequel to begin by 2020.
