Germany offers diesel incentive 12th March 2007

Germany is looking to increase the number of older diesel vehicles on its roads being retrofitted with emissions filtering technology.

The country has moved to provide owners of older diesel vehicles with a reason to get their vehicles retrofitted, offering incentives to reduce the amount of pollution being created by vehicles.

Under new laws approved on Friday, the German government will offer a tax rebate to the owners of diesel cars from April 1st, provided they fit the vehicles with exhaust particle filters.

It is hoped that the offer will result in a raft of people retrofitting their vehicles, which would significantly reduce the amount of pollution caused by vehicles in Germany. If the scheme proves successful, it could be taken up in other European countries.

Reuters reports that those vehicles which are not fitted with a filter and do not meet European Union standards will rise by an average of €25 per year, meaning that many people are expected to take advantage of the German government's offer.
