German manufacturers collaborate on Bluetec 12th October 2006
German automakers are planning to join forces in a bid to develop clean diesels in the US, it has been reported.
According to German industry newspaper Automobilwoche, German firms are aiming to work together to bring the Bluetec technology, which was developed by Mercedes-Benz and Bosch, to the US market.
Volkswagen, Audi, BMW and Mercedes are all looking to launch Bluetec in the US in the hope that it will offer customers an alternative to gas-fuelled vehicles.
Just five per cent of the market share in the US belongs to diesel vehicles, compared to 50 per cent in western Europe, highlighting the large potential that may exist as consumers in the US look to cut the cost of running a car and try to reduce the pollution they create.
Reuters reports that a spokesman for DaimlerChrysler, the parent company of Volkswagen and Mercedes, confirmed the report, which explains that the new alliance is also looking to make significant cost savings by jointly entering the market.
