Fuel cells: 6th October 2005
Fuel cells have been hailed as the "key technology of the future" at the Ninth Grove Fuel Cell Symposium held in London, reports the BBC.
Recipient of the Grove Medal, Alan Lloyd, told attendees: "Fuel cells are the key technology of the future; we have the power to make it happen."
"Despite the fact that fuel cells are not in widespread use, we have the knowledge and the products to make it a real prospect," he continued.
Also in attendance was the UK government's chief scientific advisor Sir David King who predicted some dramatic changes in the industry over the next two decades.
He explained that adopting alternative fuels such as hydrogen fuel cells would help with climate change and urged the government, industry and academia to work together both to develop and popularise the new technologies.
Consumer electronics was highlighted as one area in which progress could be made. The introduction of hydrogen fuel cell-powered buses into California was also held up as an example of good practice.
