Fuel cells promoted in commercial vehicle sector 16th June 2006
Parcel delivery firm UPS says its alternative fuel green fleet has accumulated over 100 million miles transporting packages since the turn of the millennium.
The firm has been using fuel cell technology to reduce the emissions produced by its fleet and has invested over $15 million in alternative power technology.
Commenting on the figure, Robert Hall, fleet environmental manager at UPS, asserted: "We want to reduce emissions and our impact on the environment and operate in a sustainable manner."
The UPS green fleet will receive an additional 50 hybrid delivery vehicles over the next 12 months, each 35 per cent more fuel efficient than a standard model.
The delivery firm will add 4,100 low-emission trucks to its fleet in 2006, to add to the 8,000 that it already runs.
Working with the Environmental Protection Agency and car manufacturer DaimlerChrysler, UPS said that it is intent on setting further hydrogen fuel cell landmarks in the commercial delivery arena.
