Fuel cell research centre expands 21st July 2006

A US fuel cell research centre, dedicated to helping move fuel cell technologies to the commercial sector, has gained another member.

Millennium Cell, a leading developer of hydrogen battery technology, has joined the University of South Carolina's NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Centre for Fuel Cells.

The project is the USA's only National Science Foundation-sponsored fuel cell centre.

As a member of the centre, Millennium Cell will partner advance research in hydrogen storage materials, boron chemistry, and hydrogen battery systems.

"Millennium Cell is pleased to join the USC Fuel Cell Research Centre and work with this well-known group of companies that are partnering with USC researchers to develop innovative solutions for the advancement of commercial applications and deployment of hydrogen storage technologies," commented David Ramm, Millennium Cell chief executive.

"Millennium Cell's decision to join our Centre is another important step in our efforts to create a future fuels research hub in Columbia, South Carolina," added John VanZee, the centre's director.

The centre already includes the likes of General Motors, BASF, Boeing and LG Electronics.

Millennium Cell develops technology for the military, medical, industrial and consumer electronics sectors.

Platinum and other pgms are used in fuel cell technology, but have also been utilised in hydrogen gas storage devices.
