Fuel cell moped up for Turner Prize 18th October 2005
An installation incorporating a fuel cell moped has been listed for the 2005 Turner Prize.
Simon Starling's Tabernas Desert Run (2004) grew out of a journey he undertook on a fuel cell moped across the Andalusian desert.
Not only did the moped provide the transport for his journey and the inspiration for his artwork, it also provided the medium. The Glaswegian artist's multimedia piece is constructed from the fuel cell-powered moped itself, vitrine and watercolour.
In front of the moped is a watercolour of a cactus he uses to draw comparisons between the efforts of man to produce feats of engineering such as the fuel cell moped and the cactus' natural design.
Fuel cell vehicles produce only water as an emission, which in this case was used by Mr Starling to paint the watercolour.
Mr Starling's other works focus on matters of energy consumption, globalisation and technology.
