Fuel cell karts to compete in 'zero emission' competition 24th January 2008
Fuel cells are becoming the focus of a new motor racing class called Formula Zero (FZ).
FZ is the new zero emission race class for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and the class will begin with a Student Edition in 2008 before scaling up to the City Edition and the Circuit Edition.
The City Edition will see fuel cells power Formula 3 size cars while full size racing vehicles will be powered in the Circuit Edition.
Top universities from around the world are designing, building and racing their own karts that will be powered by hydrogen fuel cells.
The first race is scheduled to take place on August 14th to 16th in Rotterdam while 2008 will also see races in Detroit and Dubai.
London will get a race in September when the karts come to Potters Fields Park at Tower Bridge in association with the London Hydrogen Partnership.
The news follows comments from Chris Aylett, Chief Executive of the Motorsport Industry Association (MIA), who called for the motorsport industry to lead the way in the engineering of greener cars.
