Fuel cell cars to make LAX debut 10th February 2006
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) will begin using five hydrogen-powered cars this week in a pilot scheme to develop environmentally friendly cars.
Keys to the $1 million fuel cell vehicles will be donated by automobile manufacturer DaimlerChrysler in a presentation ceremony later today.
Trials like this will further the commercial viability of fuel cell cars, which emit only water vapour and are completely environmentally-friendly.
"These zero-emission cars will be used for general transportation over a two-year period to further the development and practical experience with this technology," LAX declared.
DaimlerChrysler has produced more than 20 research vehicles and prototypes in the past two decades, including three fuel cell buses delivered to the city of Beijing in November last year.
The firm's efforts, however, will make only a small dent in the greenness of LAX, which serves 60 million passengers annually.
