Fuel cell car refuelling station opens 14th November 2007

A new hydrogen re-fuelling facility for fuel cell-powered vehicles has opened in the US, as part of the US Department of Energy hydrogen infrastructure program.

Located in White Plains, New York, the facility will produce hydrogen from electricity generated from renewable energy provided through the New York Power Authority.

The centre, which will manufacture and store 30 kilograms of hydrogen on-site, is the culmination of a joint venture between Shell Hydrogen and White Plains' regional government.

Philip Baxley, President of Shell Hydrogen, said: "The city of White Plains has shown real leadership in cooperating on this project with Shell.

"White Plains' successful track record in introducing alternate fuels for city vehicles is a great fit with Shell Hydrogen's efforts to develop solutions to transportation and energy challenges.

He added: "This station is another step towards an eventual network of stations serving our customers here in the US and around the world."

The fuelling station will provide fuel to General Motors' fuel cell vehicles as part of the Project Driveway scheme, under which businesses will be loaned fuel cell-powered SUVs.
