Fuel cell buses debut in California 17th November 2005

A fuel cell-powered bus was unveiled this week at the Fuel Cell Seminar in California.

The bus is powered by a 120 fuel cell system that combines pure hydrogen, stored aboard the bus with oxygen but comes at a price.

The vehicle cost a hefty £1.8 million to make but the manufacturer, UTC Power, believes prices will decline when the buses go into mass production.

UTC says this type of technology should be central to the government's bid for cleaner transport.

"This fuel cell-powered bus is twice as efficient as a diesel powered vehicle with water as the only emission," said president Jan van Dokkum.

The news follows recent improvements to some US diesel buses, which have been fitted with particulate reducing filters, as the government strives to improve the pollution problem in major US cities.
