The first London taxis running on hydrogen fuel cell technology have made their inaugural journeys on the capital's roads.

Intelligent Energy's Fuel Cell Black Cabs took to the road after winning Road Legal status from the UK Vehicle Certification Authority.

The first trip saw one of the fuel cell cabs journey from Forbes House, headquarters of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, to some of London's most famous landmarks.

Intelligent Energy said it is on-track to deliver a fleet of the zero emissions taxis in time for 2012.

The cabs, which have a range of 250 miles, will benefit from an increase in hydrogen refuelling stations across the capital announced by mayor Boris Johnson.

He said: "These prototype zero-emission taxis are a shining example of British ingenuity, combining revolutionary fuel cell technology with an iconic design classic.

"Affordable and low polluting cabs are within our grasp and I urge manufacturers to accelerate efforts to produce them."

The taxis were developed by an Intelligent Energy-led consortium which also features Lotus Engineering, London Taxis International and TRW Conekt, with part-funding from the UK government’s Technology Strategy Board.
