France unveils anti-emissions legislation for cars 11th December 2007

The French government has imposed a series of green taxes on gas guzzling cars and tax breaks for green vehicles to come into force immediately.

Under the new laws, a sliding scale of penalties will be introduced with charges starting at €200, with the one per cent of cars which emit the most carbon dioxide subject to a charge of €1,600.

Meanwhile, new cars which emit more than 160 CO2/gm will be charged up to €2,600.

Conversely, cars which emit less than 130 grams of CO2/km are in line for a bonus of €200, while those which produce less than 100 grams granted €1,000.

These limits will subsequently be revised and made more stringent every two years, so as to encourage car companies to manufacture cleaner vehicles.

The proposals come in the wake of a four-month consultation between car companies, environmental lobbyists and government figures.
