France unveils anti-emissions legislation for cars 11th December 2007
The French government has imposed a series of green taxes on gas guzzling cars and tax breaks for green vehicles to come into force immediately.
Under the new laws, a sliding scale of penalties will be introduced with charges starting at 200, with the one per cent of cars which emit the most carbon dioxide subject to a charge of 1,600.
Meanwhile, new cars which emit more than 160 CO2/gm will be charged up to 2,600.
Conversely, cars which emit less than 130 grams of CO2/km are in line for a bonus of 200, while those which produce less than 100 grams granted 1,000.
These limits will subsequently be revised and made more stringent every two years, so as to encourage car companies to manufacture cleaner vehicles.
The proposals come in the wake of a four-month consultation between car companies, environmental lobbyists and government figures.
