Ford launches 21st February 2005
Ford has become the first British automotive manufacturer to launch a vehicle "end of life" recovery strategy.
The car major has detailed plans to meet the new EC legislation which will require manufacturers to ensure their offerings are disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.
Part of this commitment entails meeting recycling and recovery targets of 85 per cent (by weight) of all models by 2006, with the responsibility for the vehicles being shifted on to the producer.
Ford will work with Cartakeback, a subsidiary of the UK Shredders consortium, to establish its recovery network.
Together the firms will set up "take back" and treatment facilities across the country, with the first approved site being named as GW & G Bridges of Crawley, Sussex.
Ford of Britain chairman Roger Putnam said a hotline number and dedicated website would keep owners informed of local sites, offering advice and details of the qualifying conditions for free take back.
