Ford has announced that it is planning to develop a new fuel cell-powered motorhome.

The automaker is teaming up with US motorhome manufacturer, Airstream, in an effort to develop a concept vehicle that will use a new plug-in hydrogen hybrid fuel cell system called HySeries Drive.

Ford claims that the new system is half the weight and cost of other types of fuel cell and will also be able to operate in extreme winter temperatures, making it more reliable than current versions being used in vehicles.

Announcing the company's commitment to developing clean energy alternatives, Ford's executive director of design. Peter Hobury, said: "Ford is going to continue developing an expressive range of these vehicles."

He added: "The Ford Airstream concept is a futuristic look at crossovers. It's the ultimate modern touring vehicle that delivers flexibility and capability with dynamic design that evokes the spirit of the journey."
