Firm releases new aviation fuel cell power system 24th August 2006
Protonex Technology will unveil its new aviation fuel cell power system at an upcoming meeting for the Association of Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI).
The company – a leading provider of advanced fuel cell power systems – will also present recent research on its unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) propulsion system.
Protonex develops and manufactures the compact fuel cell systems for a variety of portable power applications in the ten to 500-watt range. All designs are intended to offer both stand-alone portable power solutions and systems that can be hybridised with existing power technologies.
A number of military UAVs have been utilising the technology for some time now as advanced fuel cells offer quiet, reliable and energy-dense power that allows aircraft to undertake extended flight times while on covert missions.
Scott Pearson, Protonex CEO, said: "The progress we have made to date on our UAV power platform already provides the opportunity to double or triple the flight durations of a typical small UAV.
"We are now focussing on the next steps in productisation of the system, which includes working with UAV manufacturers to integrate the power system into an appropriate UAV platform designed specifically for extended flight duration with greater payload."
