FCVs navigate city conditions 20th October 2005
Five Ford Focus Fuel Cell Vehicles (FCVs) have been handed over to businesses in South Michigan to undergo trials in city conditions in another sign of the growing commercialisation of the technology.
This forms part of a larger initiative, which sees Ford distributing a total of 30 FCVs in five cities to test its new technology in action.
The FFV claims to offer the benefits of a hybrid vehicle, fused with those of a fuel cell one. Its fuel cell engine uses hydrogen fuel and oxygen from the air to produce electrical power that then drives the electrical motor.
Not only will the new technology benefit future FCVs, Ford's Mary Ann Wright says it will also be used by other Ford models.
"It also will help us deliver even better gasoline hybrids in the near term," she commented.
Among its other fuel-efficient and environmentally-focussed vehicles, Ford can count clean diesels, gasoline-electric hybrids and hydrogen internal combustion engines (H2ICE).
