TWP completes erection of phase I shaft headgears at RBPlat's Styldrift project, full production scheduled for 2017 (18/03/11)
Engineering consultancy TWP Projects has completed erecting the preassembled headgears for the main and services shafts at Royal Bafokeng Platinum's Styldrift shaft complex.
The pit in the western limb of the Bushveld Complex forms part of a joint venture between Royal Bafokeng and Anglo Platinum to exploit platinum group metals in the Merensky and upper group two reefs on the Boschkoppie, Styldrift and Frischgewaagd farms.
Full production of 430,000t/m for the Styldrift Merensky phase one project is expected to be reached in 2017.
"Assembly of the main shaft headgear, an A-frame steel tower structure reaching a height of 58.6 metres, started a few months ago and the erection started on January 31st, with the last lift taking place on February 18th," explained TWP project manager Pieter Louw.
Mustang Announces New Platinum and Palladium Discovery in Manitoba (22/03/11)
Mustang Minerals Corp has announced a significant new drill discovery of platinum and palladium mineralisation at its Mayville Property in the northern portion of the Bird River Intrusive Complex in southeastern Manitoba.
An average grade of 9.5 g/t combined platinum and palladium was intersected at 9.15 metres within a wider zone of 41.16 metres at an average grade of 2.9 g/t platinum group metals.
Rhodium was also assayed within the 9.1-metre section at 0.27g/t.
The firm says it is to commence a large-scale drilling programme to test the potential of the discovery.
Robin Dunbar, president of Mustang Minerals, said: "These intersections represent a new grassroots discovery of platinum-palladium mineralisation at the Mayville Property.
"This is the first phase of drilling at Mayville since 2005-2006 and it highlights the excellent potential of the Mayville property and Mustang's extensive land position in the Bird River Complex."
Pan African starts site clearance for Phoenix platinum tailings plant, work on schedule (23/03/11)
Pan African Resources has started site clearance at its Phoenix platinum project in South Africa.
It comes ahead of construction of the chrome tailings retreatment plant (CTRP) at the project in the North West Province of the country, which started after the firm agreed a deal with International Ferro Metals in 2010.
Work on the CTRP is on schedule, with construction due to start in May and commissioning in October, the precious metal producer said.
The CTRP full production rate of 20,000t/m is forecast to be hit in the first three months of next year.
Chief executive Jan Nelson said: "This is another key milestone in the process of Pan African becoming a platinum producer in addition to the company already producing approximately 100,000 ounces of gold per annum."
NORONT FILES PROJECT DESCRIPTION FOR EAGLE'S NEST DEVELOPMENT (23/03/11)
Noront Resources Ltd has filed the project description for its Eagle's Nest deposit in the James Bay Lowlands of Ontario with Canadian authorities.
The firm is planning a one million tonne per annum underground mine and mill complex processing high grade nickel, copper, platinum and palladium ore from the deposit.
It is thought the mine will produce approximately 150,000t of concentrate annually, to be pumped via a buried pipeline to a proposed site 100km away called Webequie Junction.
Noront's president and chief executive officer, Wes Hanson, said: "This is the first step of the permitting process and establishes a starting point for future consultation regarding infrastructure and mine development of the Eagle's Nest deposit with the local First Nation communities as well as local, provincial and federal government agencies."
Colossus Minerals Drills 7.81 Metres at 136.43 g/t Gold, 249.20 g/t Platinum and 121.40 g/t Palladium in Extensions of Central Mineralized Zone at Serra Pelada, Brazil (24/03/11)
Colossus Minerals Inc has encountered additional high grade mineralisation during its 25,000-metre surface drill programme at the Serra Pelada gold, platinum and palladium project in Brazil.
The firm intersected three high grade subzones in the Central Mineralised Zone (CMZ), two of which exhibit the highest grades of platinum encountered at the Serra Pelada project.
Colossus said 3.37g/t platinum and 3.92g/t palladium was found at 1.8 metres, 70.68g/t platinum and 45.95g/t palladium at 6.93 metres, and 294.2g/t platinum and 121.4g/t palladium identified at 7.81 metres.
Vic Wall, vice president for exploration at Colossus, said: "We are particularly excited by the intersection of very high-grade gold-PGE [platinum group element] subzones in the CMZ extensions and are following up on these and stepping out further on the CMZ."
Eurasia Mining reports more encouraging drill results from Monchetundra PGM licence (29/03/11)
Eurasia Mining Plc has confirmed the discovery of so-called hanging wall copper-platinum group metals (Cu-pgm) mineralisation after reporting the latest drilling results from its Monchetundra licence area near Monchegorsk on the Kola Peninsula in Russia.
Two new holes, MT-86 and MT-87, identified high grade intercepts which were first found in Drill Hole 79.
It is thought that the Cu-pgm mineralisations are similar to those mined in the Monchegorsk district between 1937 and 1975.
"While the high grades intersected in MT-86 should not be considered as indicative of future average deposit grade in the Monchetundra licence area, their significance is the indication of the likely occurrence of very high grades within the mineralised zones," Eurasia said in a statement.
Magma Metals Limited: Thunder Bay North-Exploration Update (29/03/11)
Magma Metals Ltd has updated investors on the winter drilling programme at its Thunder Bay North platinum-palladium-copper-nickel project in Ontario, and outlined its exploration plans for the remainder of 2011.
One drill hole intersected 3.86g/t platinum and 3.72g/t palladium at 53.65 metres, including 5.60g/t platinum and 5.39g/t palladium at 33 metres.
The firm also said there was potential to extend resources into the northern part of Current Lake and in the Beaver Lake area, after it intersected mineralisation outside the mineral resource.
Geoscience data release likely to prompt mining exploration on Vancouver Island (31/03/11)
New geoscience data reveals Vancouver is to be a focus for mining exploration.
Following the release of two separate investigations, there was a sharp rise in the number of claims staked on North Island.
In particular, explorers appear interested in a re-examination of moss-trapped stream sediment samples that reveal there are platinum and palladium values in previously unstaked areas of the island.
Pacific North West Capital Finalizes Acquisition of the River Valley Platinum Group Metals (PGM) Project, Sudbury Ontario (07/04/11)
Pacific North West Capital Corp (PFN) has completed the purchase of the remaining 50 per cent stake in its joint venture with Anglo Platinum covering the River Valley platinum group metals (pgm) project.
The transaction provides the mining explorer and its wholly-owned subsidiary Kaymin Resources Ltd with an undivided 100 per cent interest in the pgm project in Ontario.
Harry Barr, president and chief executive officer of PFN, explained that the shares issued to Kaymin will make Anglo Platinum a strategic investor in PFN.
"Anglo Platinum will have the opportunity to participate in the upside of the project through the future success of the company and at the same time, PFN will be able seek new sources of funding to advance the River Valley pgm project," he added.
